![]() ![]() Whether Cinderella is an old friend or a new discovery, it is a delightful way to usher in the holiday season. Todd Houseknecht's sound design augments moments both magical and comedic. The lighting design by Cailen Waddell adds amazing magical flourishes, from the Fairy Godmother waving her wand to cause a flow of magic dust to cross the proscenium, to the clock above the stage that marks the time. Thomas Mauney's scenic design is simplistic when needed but ornately detailed when the time is right. Cinderella's costume change from peasant girl to princess is astonishing, and I am still unsure how they pull it off. As if the hand puppet mice were not cute enough, wait until you see them turn into adorable ponies, thanks to Ms. The costumes by Vicki Olson are astonishingly beautiful, ranging from cartoon colors for the stepmother and her daughters to period perfection on the common folk of the kingdom. There is also the "Sneeze Polka" at the Ball, a bit of a one-joke song that might go on too long but does get the audience engaged. The directors have found pleasant opportunities for everyone to participate, sending the Prince out to try the slipper on audience members, their reactions caught on a Facebook Live feed for all to see. While the plot is familiar, the production is fresh. ![]() The Prince, unsure if he will find true love in such a quick time, agrees to a Christmas Ball in his honor. As we know, Cinderella's father, who had remarried a woman with two daughters, passes away, leaving Cinderella under the care of her new stepmother, a wickedly hilarious Alison Lawrence, and her two ugly step-sisters, Henrietta and Gertrude, played with gusto by Tim Cherry and M. Their toe-tapping introductory number of the Fairy Godmother, performed with superb comedic instincts by Tina Morris-Anderson, signals that this will not be your average Cinderella. ![]() In this telling we get the back story from two fairy helpers, the delightful Ruth Berry and Elizabeth Anderson. This is the Prince Street Players' version of the beloved fairy tale and, as usual, directors Rod and Nancy Rich do a fine job tweaking the story with contemporary humor, this year including references to Pokémon Go and the President elect. The audience is greeted by the animated beauty of digital stars floating on a screen as familiar images from the storyslipper, castle and pumpkinzoom up. If you follow the same old methods, the same audit approach, the same reports, you will not be surprised when you get the same results and findings, and the fraudsters learn the process and are able to hide. In today’s audit, if you don’t have all this knowledge, issues tend to be overlooked. Understand the people is key to understanding the money. Let them know you are here to help their department by investigating processes. People feel attacked when they are investigated, and you need to put them at ease. Your need for information and data can only be fulfilled by being collaborative and a team player with a bit of persistence and relentlessness. Interview the peers in the group, use your critical thinking and management skills to see the whole picture from the auditors’ viewpoint. When asking questions, people skills come into play. Is your query about time of day, day of week, month, or is it a holiday? You may be suspicious of strange timing, the order of events or gaps? How about if you expand that microscope to categories, such as peer group outliers? Apply Your People Skills How about deviations from the rules of nature? An example of this is a time-series analysis audit. There are deviations from the business, contract or industry rules. Start by asking, “What are you looking for in an audit? What is your intention?” Audit traditionally looks at rule deviations, and in some cases, these could be vast. With data analytics, data can be examined from different angles, perspectives, and possibilities, especially those that may have overlooked previously. This expands your contribution to the overall business strategy and improves the auditor opinion, not to mention the possibility of saving the client money. ![]() You need to challenge your reporting and audit approaches to find what you’ve missed. You cannot find issues that you have historically overlooked by looking at things the same way you’ve been looking for. ![]() The same audit approach, the same reports regenerated on a schedule yielding the same results and findings won’t give you much. Solid interviewing techniques and management skills also help ensure the process runs smoothly. Finding the answer may require you to revisit the same sources more than once. It is also important to be creative, collaborative and persistent. While most auditors are natural critical thinkers, detecting peculiar behavior requires innate skepticism and an inquisitive approach. During a time-series analysis are you suspicious of the time of day or day of the week? A month or holiday or maybe you would like to find out if there are any time gaps or a deviation in the order of events, the actual cycle of the process? Maybe it is found purely in the category or peer group outliers. ![]() When investigating rule deviations, these deviations most likely will be from the business rules or industry standards, rules of nature, or potentially from the contractual terms. Use facts to drive key questions and data analytics as to the truth serum. What the management styles of the leadership? How are teams structured? What is the culture like? What controls are in place and how are they communicated? What motivates the employees and what types of relationships do they share?įinding the answers will also help you understand the data, which is a major step towards discovering what should not be there. It’s important to gain as much knowledge about the organization you’re auditing as possible. You can’t audit what you don’t understand. Data analytics can be used to pinpoint patterns and trends of suspicious behavior, deviations from the rules, and associations and correlations that should, or should not, exist to uncover fraudulent activity. These anomalies, errors, fraud, waste, and abuse can be found in discrepancies between systems that should not exist. As technology gets “smarter” so do the fraudsters working to outsmart the system.Īuditors have traditionally used data analytics for rule deviations, time-series analysis, investigate category/peer group outliers and other methods but is that enough? Fraud could lurk within process reengineering opportunities, business/process efficiency opportunities, groups working in silos, revenue leakage, and/or payment abnormalities. The median loss from occupational fraud was a whopping $150,000. Only 26.4% of frauds are found in six months or less, and 7.8% take more than 60 months to find. ![]() The ACFE Report to the Nations includes a graph which quantified how much time it takes to identify fraud. Missing information can also indicate fraud, but is difficult to find if data from different systems are not joined together for comparison. When working with rows and columns of data to spot suspicious behaviors, fraud and errors can look very similar to one another. ![]() ![]() ![]() It’s a stretchy air dry modelling clay that you can find on Amazon or at the craft store. ![]() We used Model Magic clay because it’s soft, non-toxic, and reasonably priced. But there's more depth and delicacy at play here than most of what Garfield gave me, thank heavens. Early on I had frightful flashbacks of Andrew Garfield gay-gasping his way through Angels in America. Thank god he does, because in many ways Rusty is written as a caricature of being queer, a pose merely, no substance. It's a tender, gentle performance, and Hoffman finds the humanity and sadness in Rusty. Rusty is struggling financially, living in a roach motel, being treated badly by the world at large- but she maintains a softness and kindness which lends the movie that surrounds her a similar sense that all is not lost. He stars as Rusty, a trans woman presenting mostly as a gay man, who has one hell of a heart of solid gold. Flawless is one of PSH's first proper leading roles, and it's real proof of his talent that this clunker of a picture didn't sink him. Yet again, Schumacher plucks up a perfectly good actor just before their career really takes off (there's more of this to come in future his collaborations with Colin Farrell). He is always best in tight engagement with his actors, and Flawless is no exception.Īnd his actors are good! The real star here is Philip Seymour Hoffman (god rest his soul), who at this point was barely a star and barely a known character actor. This is, I believe, not surprising for Schumacher. The on-the-street aspects of this movie are occasionally charming- it is in the small, intimate moments that the movie shines. There's even some interesting technical work, as Schumacher plays with shaky handheld camera movement, lending some scenes a charming visual touch of verisimilitude. Which is a shame, because there are very good performances struggling beneath the burden of the words and story. So now, in 1999, an established director, why did he return to writing? And what had happened to his writing skills in the meantime?īecause, I'm afraid to say, the script for Flawless is an absolute disaster. Schumacher has said that he only got into writing because he wanted to be a director, and he noticed that writers often were allowed to direct. I have questions as to why, what he was thinking, how he approached the story, what it was at it's conception. I lay this particularly at his feet in regards to Flawless because he wrote it himself. It's unnecessary and tends to pop up when you've nearly forgotten it's a thing, as if Schumacher didn't think there was quite enough drama in his initial set up and so needed to sprinkle in some spice. I think the kindness and humanism with which he treats his gay and trans characters is wonderful.īut then, for some reason, there's this bizzaro crime plot to darken up the proceedings and add a tawdry tone to everything. I think Schumacher's idea of confronting a conservative, shameful bigot with the hatefulness of a world that thinks you're pathetic is decent. ![]() I think the impulse to make a movie that features gay characters who are unashamed of themselves and are not punished for existing, is a noble one. As they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. ![]() it's hard not to, given how deeply unsuccessful a movie it is. On that level, I don't want to be harsh on it, or mean to it. ![]() Though the final execution results in a tonally inconsistent, confusing, messy, pretty bad movie, the idea behind it is as open-hearted and decent as anything Schumacher has made to date. I don't want to because I believe this movie, Schumacher's second of 1999 (which feels awfully fast), has good intentions. I don't want to give Flawless a hard time, I really don't.
